The Importance of an Alternative to Traditional College
Hello friends,
The campaign to be your representative on the Maury County School Board began yesterday, as I sat down with a production company to film our first ad. My message was clear. I am a proud graduate of Columbia State Community College, Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee State University. Being the first member of my family to go to college has enabled me to provide care to so many members of our community as a nurse and as a nurse practitioner. It also afforded me the opportunity to start a business that has helped so many neighbors from this community.
However, I realize I would not be able to provide care to people in our community without the help of electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians and so many others that chose a vocational or technical career, as these folks keep our offices running. This is one of the primary reasons I am asking for your vote to be the 4th District representative on the Maury County School Board. We must stop assuming all children should pursue a four year college education. My son, Jackson, is a sophomore at Mount Pleasant High School. He can tell you today that he wants to be an electrician and own his own business. As a school system, we should be able to provide Jackson, and so many kids like Jackson who know they do not want to attend a four year college, an opportunity to complete vocational training during high school. Maury County needs a vocational school, so kids like Jackson can pursue their dreams of being a tradesman.
There is so much in the news today about student loan debt. Regretfully I had student loan debt. Thankfully my career afforded me the ability to pay that debt off two years ago. I have a common sense solution to the student loan debt debate. We should stop pushing kids to go to college who know they do not want to go. We must offer kids an alternative to a four year college by providing them with a vocational education starting in high school.
I am not asking for your vote as a Republican, Democrat, or even a Libertarian. I am asking as a common sense candidate who has children in the Maury County Public School System. Our children’s education is way too important to subject it to the slings and arrows of today’s political environment. Our kids simply deserve better than that.
If you believe we need to invest in our future electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, carpenters, auto mechanics and so many other trades, I ask that you vote for me on August 1st to represent the 4th District on the Maury County School Board. After all, the kids of today will be our peers tomorrow.
I hope you have a great day,
Chandler
